The Edmonton Firefighters Memorial Society was formed in 1997. It rose from a desire to recognize those members of Edmonton Fire Rescue Services who had given the supreme sacrifice in the service of the citizens of Edmonton.
Edmonton Firefighters Memorial Plaza is located at 10350- 83 ave, in the heart of Old Strathcona. This site was chosen for its historical significance. The plaza itself, sits upon the foundations of the original firehall in the Town of Strathcona. That firehall was replaced in 1909 by the building directly east, which now houses the Walterdale Theatre Company. When the City of Edmonton amalgamated with Strathcona in 1912, this became Edmonton firehall # 6.
The statue, "The Rescue", by local artist Danec Mozdanski, depicts the rescue of a young girl from a home on fire. The bell tower houses the ceremonial bell and bears the plaques honoring the names of Edmonton's fallen firefighters. Three wrought iron reliefs show the evolution of the fire engines in Edmonton, from horse drawn to modern diesel trucks, and provides a backdrop for several benches. The plaza becomes a focal point during festival season each and every summer, as Edmontonians gather in Old Strathcona.
Our purpose is to honour and preserve the names and memories of our fallen. We do this by providing support to the families of our fallen and by raising funds to maintain the plaza so that there will always be a place for people to come and remember our heroes.
The plaza is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We welcome firefighters from all departments, their families, families of the fallen, and members of the public, to visit the plaza grounds anytime they wish to do so.
